What is a HEPA filter, and do I really need to have one?

There are so many different vacuums on the market these days.  Ones that have bags, others that don’t.  Some that have filters, others have HEPA filters.  What does all this mean and do I really need to have one?allergens What is a HEPA filter, and do I really need to have one?

HEPA filters are a type of filter that is able to trap large amounts of very small particles that normal vacuum cleaners would normally puff back into the air around the home.

” True HEPA filters should be able to trap at least 99.7% of airbourne particulates of 0.3 microns or larger”.  HEPA filters help trap those small particles that can cause problems with allergy sufferers.  Dust flying through the air can trigger asthma attacks, sneezing and coughing.  By reducing the amount of airbourne particles this will help maintain cleaner air for you and your family.

By using a good vacuum with a HEPA filter, it will not only avoid nasty airbourne allergens, but will help with removing up to 70% of dry soiling out of the carpet fibres.  By giving your carpet a good vacuum every week, this will also help reduce abrasion to carpet fibres, helping prolong the life of your carpet. Vacuum Cleaner HEPA Filter 300x162 What is a HEPA filter, and do I really need to have one?

Vacuums with HEPA filters are also very beneficial with removing pet hair from the carpet.

Look into getting a HEPA filter on your vacuum, it will be a positive start to removing almost all of the negative elements from your carpet.

How clean is your mattress

March 15, 2011

You have had a long day at work you’re not feeling well.  You are tired and run down and all you want is a good night’s sleep.  You always see on TV and read in magazines about the debate on which is good for you : too much or too little sleep.  The real question that should be asked : is your mattress healthy to sleep on?

Every night the human body loses approximately 1 litre of body fluid through the skin, pores and mouth as well as millions of skin flakes.  Just think of it this way, we all have showers each day, we all wash our clothes, what about the mattress?  How many bugs and germs does our mattress contain?

A mattress that is not protected with a cover will have an infestation of dust mites within 3 months.  Not only dust mites but body oils, sweat, fats and DEAD SKIN – gross!  We recently got called to a job where the owner had rented out his fully furnished unit in New Farm.  The tenants had never picked up a broom or a vacuum cleaner once during their stay.

He generously supplied the tenants with a brand new mattress protector – which they kept neatly in the cupboard in the original packaging for the 2 years.  Our technician arrived and he had two queen size and two single mattresses.  Well lets say, who knows if they even put sheets on the bed.Humanurineandbloodonmattress20004small 300x224 How clean is your mattress

There were:

  • Urine stains
  • Blood stains
  • Food Stains
  • Drink stains
  • Body odour
  • Oils
  • Fats

You can see for yourself by just taking a look at the photos.Humanurineandbloodonmattress20001small 300x224 How clean is your mattress

Unfortunately these mattresses were not able to be restored so this owner lost a lot of money due to the tenant not using the protectors and not having the mattress cleaned frequently.

It is recommended that every time you change your sheets you should be vacuuming your mattress at the same time.  You should have your mattress cleaned every year and treated for dust mites.

You spend approximately one third of your life in your bed, so it makes good sense to keep them clean.  Sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite!

Blood Stain Removal

February 8, 2011

We recently had a client from Camp Hill who rang us very distressed as his mum had had an accident and there was blood all over her single mattress and on the carpet.  He was worried that not only did he have the stress of his mother being in hospital but he thought he would have to replace the mattress and the carpet for when his mother did return from the hospital.  As you can see from the “before” photo, the carpet and the mattress were in a bit of a mess.

The best thing the customer had done was not to try and use any carpet cleaning or stain removal products from the supermarket.  If customers do use other products on stains it can set the stain and hinder how well our products do work.  All of our technicians are trained and qualified through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification.  This allows our technicians to provide expert stain removal and fibre identification.

If you follow this link to the Stain Removal page on our website, you can watch a video of our technicians in action.

We sent one of our most experienced technicians out to do the job.  With his professional stain removal kit he removed the stains.  The stains did take a couple of hours but they were removed 100% as you can see from the pictures.  The customer was over the moon as we saved him from having to buy a new mattress and installing new carpet.

Things to remember when you have a similar situation:

  • Don’t use products from the supermarkets.  These products are not designed for all types of carpets and can react with your stain.
  • Don’t use home remedies as they can also react with your stain.
  • Leave your stain to the professionals – this can save you money and stress.

Mattress Cleaning Tips to Reduce Allergens

November 17, 2010

When people are affected by allergies and allergens it can really affected their quality of life.  Allergies are on the increase and it is estimated that they can affect up to 40% of the population at some time.  They can cause inflammation of the eyes and nose (rhinitis), lungs (asthma) and skin (eczema).

One controllable culprit in the battle of allergens is the house dust mite.  As most people spend up to 1/3 of their life in bed it could be that their mattress is one of the causes of the problem.  As we can pay up to $10,000 for our mattresses we should look after them.  Humans are constantly shedding their skin which provides food for the dust mite and the mattress provides a warm and humid environment for dust mites to live.  No matter how clean your home is, it is likely that there will be dust mites found here.

It is recommended that mattresses should be cleaned every six months by a professional cleaner.  Using an extraction method is the best way because this will reduce allergens.  To reduce allergen irritants in between regular cleaning, a professional cleaner can also apply a neutralising spray.  This spray neutralises a protein in the dust mite faeces which is what acts as a trigger for allergies.  It is not a pesticide.

Our mattresses are contaminated with dust mites, dust mite faeces, dead skin, body oils, sweat stains etc.  The average dust mite is 0.5mm in length and is not visible to the naked eye.  Over 7000 dust mites can fit on a fingernail.  A dust mite moults several times during its life, producing 200 times its weight in waste and will lay 300 eggs.  Each mite produces 40 to 100 faeces pellets per day.  The mite’s droppings are coated in an enzymatic slimy substance which, after drying, becomes mixed with other particles forming household dust.

You should have an allergen control plan which also involves regular cleaning of your carpets and other upholstery.  To control dust mites there are other steps you can take :

  1. Use of air filter devices in your rooms
  2. Sheets should be washed every week using hot water
  3. Pillows should be washed at least 4 times a year unless a dust mite proof cover is being used
  4. Blankets should be washed on a monthly basis
  5. Mattresses should be professionally cleaned every 6 months

If you follow these steps you are helping yourself and your family keep allergies and allergens under control.
