You’re vacuuming your rug and you have noticed some of the fibres are starting to pull away as you vacuum. You get down on your hands and knees and you see bald patches or a web like pattern on your rug like the ones in the photos. What can this be?

I’m sorry to say your rug has become dinner for our pesky friends the carpet moth and carpet beetle.

Pest Control for Moths

They do their damage in the larval stage where they are (horror of horrors) little maggot like creatures. Moth larvae can cause damage to a rug in a matter of weeks. They eat just the woollen fibre and leave a web like pattern. Moths rarely infest rugs that are in regular use. They prefer to be left alone and usually seek out rugs that are being stored or find spots that are under the furniture. They also prefer dark places. So a rug that is walked on and vacuumed regularly is hardly at risk.

Rugs or sections of rugs covered by furniture must be disturbed from time to time to prevent moths from settling in. This means moving furniture off the rugs every several months or so and vacuuming. When doing pest control inspection on a rug for moths, remember that most moth damage is to the back of a rug where moths are least likely to be disturbed. So examine the back of the rug and look for moths, moth larvae or the webbing they leave behind. (as shown in the photos)

They lay eggs in dust and lint in dark, hard to access places. Both the adults and larvae eat wool rugs (and sometimes silk rugs), but most damage is done by the larvae. While moths eat through wool rugs leaving a web like pattern, carpet beetles eat right through the rug, cotton foundation and all.

You’re at a restaurant and you’ve ordered this fantastic steak. How does this relate to rug cleaning? Bare with me and I’ll explain. The first thing you notice when the plate is brought to the table is that you look at how well the plate is presented. You notice all of the garnishes and without those final touches the plate would look very dull. If something looks appealing to the eye, you’re attracted to it even more.

You have noticed that your dog or cat has urinated on your favourite rug, so the first thing you do is to go and get a bucket of water, some bi-carb soda and try to clean and remove the urine stain.  As you are scrubbing away at the stain the next thing you notice is that an awful odour appears.  Spray as much deodorant as you want, but I’m sorry, that smell is not going to go away.

So you call a cheap carpet cleaner who says, “yes we can clean your rug”.  The cheap carpet cleaner comes over to your house and there they are on site cleaning your rug. Ugh, you notice that the stains are still there and the smell is only getting worse. What do you do now?

Firstly you need to understand how urine works.  It leaves the body as a hot acid and as it dries, it changes its chemical balance. When moisture is applied physically (or it could be raining and there is moisture in the air) ammonia is released which is that nasty smell we all dread.

I’m sorry to say there is only one cleaning method that guarantees 100% removal of urine odour. Your rug needs to be submerged in a wash pit that contains enzymes that will eat all of the bacteria away.

In the photo you’ll see rugs being submerged in our wash pit.  They will stay in there for nearly 24 hours.  This isn’t a small job as cheap carpet cleaners would lead you to believe as the process for cleaning urine rugs is quite detailed.

• First we badger and vacuum the rug
• The urine stained rug is submerged in our wash pit for up to 24 hours
• We then wash and extract the water from the rug thoroughly
• The rug is then dried

One style of rug that has certainly become more popular in the home and more fashionable of late, is the shagpile rug.

Due to the long pile, various thicknesses and designs that are out there today, it is important to maintain your shagpile rug by cleaning it regularly. Cleaning shag rugs however, can be tougher than ordinary rugs.  Due to the type of pile these rugs have, they require even more attention than regular rugs.

A few handy rug cleaning tips for shag pile rugs:

• To keep your rug in tip top shape, vacuum it regularly, at least twice per week
• Sweep rugs with a bristle broom to get right down to the foundation of the rug
• Take the rug (if it is not too large) and hang over the washing line or outside railing.  Use a stick or bat to beat the rug in order to loosen any soiling,

You are at a rug store looking for the final piece to decorate your home. There are so many rugs to choose from. You want quality and style and you would like all your visitors to comment on how wonderful your rug looks. Viscose, wool, art silk, rayon, polypropylene, polyester, acrylic….. OH GOSH what actually are all of these fibres and what is actually a good quality rug?

Polypropylene/olefin – The cheapest on the market, they are as good as a door mat. They are, however, easy to clean and great for the kids to play on.

Acrylic – Looks like wool, wants to be wool, but don’t be fooled as acrylic rugs lose their appearance over time and coarsen with age.

Viscose / art silk / rayon – Sneaky salesmen say this is silk, will tell you it’s silk and charge you as if it is silk. DON”T GET RIPPED OFF. It is cheap and nasty and can be made from any substance like wood pulp, crab shells or paper. It may look fantastic but the quality is quite poor.

Silk – Soft and smooth, very expensive, looks beautiful and is very appealing to the eye. Handed knotted rugs, especially Persian rugs, will hold their value and depending on the age can also be a great investment.

Wool – High resiliency and the ability of the pile to withstand abrasion throughout the life of a rug. A 100% woollen rug is good quality and if it is protected and cleaned professionally every year it will out live any cheap rug that is on the market.

Once you have purchased the final piece to decorate your home, we recommend that the rug be cleaned professionally once a year. If you do purchase a quality woollen rug please have it protected immediately to protect the fibre from unwanted stains.

A customer from Springwood brought in their rug for cleaning. We went through the pre inspection, identifying all of the stains and concerns the customer had with their rug. We identified the colour as grey to which the customer agreed.

First we used the Rug Badger and vacuumed the rug to remove all of the dry soiling from the rug.

We then applied a specialised cleaning solution which is applied hot.

Using high heat and extraction we started cleaning the rug. To our amazement the rug was not actually grey in colour – it was an off white. We could not believe our eyes. We cleaned the rug twice and achieved fantastic results. Please take a look the photos whilst we where cleaning.

The rug was finally completed and we contacted the customer to come and pick up the rug. I think he nearly fell over with shock as he didn’t realise what colour his rug actually was, he was so impressed he was lost for words.

You will be amazed how much dirt and soiling gets trapped in your rugs. Regular vacuuming may not be good enough unless you have an upright HEPA filter vacuum cleaner. There are many ads on TV about ‘Run-out Rug Sales’, one day only, $50 specials.  While all this may be well and good, sometimes it may cause more damage then they are worth. Here are some helpful rug cleaning tips to make sure your rugs last longer.

It may seem like a good idea to place a rug under the exercise machine or in the kids room for them to play on in order to protect the carpet, but by leaving them on the carpet, it can cause yellow staining.

The yellow staining occurs due to the latex backing seen predominately in tufted rugs.  Latex is used to bind the primary and secondary backings together, to hold the face fibers in place.  When left on the carpet for an extended period of time, the latex can oxidize as there is no exposure to sunlight. It is more commonly found in cheaper rugs, where the latex used is of a lower quality, usually in rugs made overseas.

Some key steps to avoid your carpets being ruined by latex can be to regularly rotate your rugs.  Ensure you vacuum underneath them regularly, allowing air flow underneath the rugs.  Another good tip is to use some non slip underlay.  Underlay is a good way to prevent colour transfer on the carpet, and with certain types, is fully washable.

Non slip underlay can be cut to fit any type of rug and helps also if on a vinyl floor.  Colour transfer can also occur onto vinyl as it is a porous surface.

Should you come across this type of staining on your floors always call a professional.  It is not recommended to attempt home rug cleaning and stain removal techniques as this can cause permanent damage.

These days we are seeing a lot of new fibres being manufactured into carpet and designer rugs.  One fibre that is commonly seen in designer rugs is Art Silk (Rayon).  Art Silk should not be confused with the natural protein fibre that is commonly woven into extravagant textiles,  Art Silk is a man made fibre.  Art Silk is made from Viscose, an organic liquid that starts out as woody pulp.  The finish on Art Silk gives a nice sheen, an added elegance to the finish on the perfect floor rug for the lounge, but is it the most practical fibre?

Over the last few weeks, a large number of rugs have arrived at our factory at Murarrie for cleaning.  Many of them contain viscose.  They are looking tired, worn and lacking life in the fibre.  As viscose /rayon is  bi-product of cotton, it tends to yellow or brown due to moisture.  By ‘wet’ cleaning this fibre, it will cause blossoming to the tip causing irreversible damage.  The fibre doesn’t tend to hold dye very well and can lose colour on the first cleaning.

Prices of these rugs can vary from a few hundred dollars into the thousands when custom made.  Is it worthwhile buying this fibre due to its asthetic benefits?  Probably not.  A good quality woollen rug will outlast and be a more practical choice for the home or office.

Should you spill anything on your viscose rug, avoid adding water or any high alkaline product such as bi-carb of soda.  Call a professional to assist and advise you on the best methods of cleaning your rug – as hasty home remedies will cause more of a headache, or a very costly lesson.
